Promise me.
by: Shawn Roberts
Alice packed her bag, brushed her teeth then washed her face. She looked good, she should. It was Alice’s first day back to school, and she had been waiting for this day for weeks. Alice got her school bag, grabbed a meal to eat and took five dollars of the dresser. She took up her hat and placed her oxygen mask over her face. She took a few deep breaths, and stepped outside.
Alice thought it looked to be a nice day.” There’s not much smog”, she thought. Then she remembered an article she read years prior. It talked about if the air doesn’t get any better by 2090, we we’ll be forced to leave our home. This troubled Alice as she walked to school that morning. “Just four more months”, she mumbled.
Alice could not believe what she saw next. As she passed the transfer terminal, she saw a creature. This creature was squirming. It was weak, small and green. It was an animal. It was an animal that was outside breathing. It was free.
Alice decided to pick it up. She put her finger out, and waited for it to react. It paused, then climb up her hand and began to crawl into her sleeve. Alice giggled and gently placed it in her hand. Alice wanted to sit with it. She looked for a terminal that contained fresh air. She found one near her school.
Alice sat down while placing the creature on her knee. She decided she should talk to it. Alice told it about what happened to her parents, and how she hated her grandparents for making the world the place it is today. Then Alice asked it to promise. She asked it to promise that someday she could live like it. She envied it, because it was free. It was living the way God intended it to be.
Alice’s watch began to beep. It stated she was 20 minutes late for school. Alice sighed. She knew it was time to send it back. The caterpillar softly wiggled in her hand, gesturing, “goodbye”.
